My grandson, Josiah, is four years old. His favorite cartoon show on television is "Rescue Heroes." I've watched the show with him several times. The plots are pretty predictable in that someone is in trouble and they call on the Rescue Heroes to, well, rescue them (that is what Rescue Heroes do). This morning as we sat down to eat our Sturdiwheat pancakes, a Friday morning tradition at our house, Josiah was excited to show me his toy magazine. At the suggestion of our business manager, Eric, my grandson had circled all the toys he thought were cool and wanted Santa to bring him for Christmas. At the top of his list are the Rescue Heroes action figures. What a surprise, right? Josiah's grandmother, Elsie, happened to hear him talking about the Rescue Heroes and asked Josiah if he knew who the greatest Rescue Hero of all is. Josiah seemed stumped. He knew all the Rescue Heroes by name, after all, he watches them every day. Grandma Elsie told him that the greatest Rescue Hero of all is Jesus Christ. Jesus is the greatest Rescue Hero because He rescues us from sin and death. He rescues people from the burning fires of hell. Josiah was impressed! He had never thought of Jesus as the greatest Rescue Hero of them all. The Bible confirms the words of Josiah's grandmother, Elsie. Listen to these great words penned by the Apostle Paul in his epistle to the Galatian churches, Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father ... (Galatianns 1:3, 4). Then Paul declared, The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen (2 Timothy 4:18). See, the Lord Jesus Christ really is the greatest Rescue Hero of them all. At Christmas we celebrate the coming of God's Rescue Hero, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible declares that God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, at just the right time, not a moment too soon or late, because we were in danger. We were perishing. But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons (Galatians 4:4, 5). That, beloved friends, is good news!
