“Hey, Irv, that’s a unique question.” You’re right–it is. It’s from 1 Chronicles 12:32, which says that the men of Issachar “understood the times and knew what Israel should do–200 chiefs, with all their relatives under their command…” As King David assembled his mighty men from the surrounding tribes of Israel, the men of Issachar stood out because they “understood the times and knew what Israel should do.” Do we understand the times in which we live? It is a time when marriage is under attack as never before, abortion is pronounced as legal, homosexuality is flagrantly paraded as a normal lifestyle, Eastern civilization is embraced, a secular worldview has infected our schools, and pornography is spreading by nearly 1000 new websites each day. Do we understand the times? A number of years ago while serving on the staff of a large suburban church in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, I held a breakfast for over 100 pastors. Dr. Mark Laaser and I spoke on the rapid rise of sexual sin, both in the culture and in the church. We spoke of the need for pastors to lead their churches into battle and stand against this immorality. At the conclusion, a number of pastors spoke with me. One in particular stands out. He said, “What you are doing in launching a purity ministry is highly commendable and much needed. You must have a lot of sexual sinners in your church. We just don’t have them in mine.” I was floored. I hoped he was kidding, but he was dead serious. He did not understand the nature and insidiousness of sexual sin, nor did he understand the men and women in his flock. The men of Issachar “understood the times.” So must we. In the face of the mounting marginalization of biblical Christianity, we cannot practice Christianity as usual. Extraordinary times demand extraordinary measures, and that brings us to the second commendable quality of the men of Issachar: “They knew what Israel should do.” Even if we understand the times in which we live, do we know what to do? When faced with the issue of secret, private sexual sin compromising believers in the church and rendering them spiritually powerless, most pastors don’t know what to do. The best they can come up with is to preach a sermon series against sexual sin, refer the immoral to private counselors, or recommend a book from Amazon.com. I believe that is why God has raised up the National Coalition For Purity. We may not have the best plan for purifying the church, but at least we have a plan. We have field tested it in the lives of over 5000 men. We are continually honing and refining it. The National Coalition For Purity longs with all our hearts to be a resource and an ally for the church to help her stand against the tsunami of sexual immorality. We believe we understand the times and know what to do. How about you? Do you understand the times and know what to do? If you do, join us!
