Chocolate Bunnies

I’ve heard it said that in some ways, people can be compared to multi-colored, foil-wrapped chocolate Easter bunnies. Who doesn’t like chocolate Easter bunnies, right? The problem is that from the outside, solid and hollow Easter bunnies look exactly the same. You never know until you bite into one whether it is solid or not.

So it is with people. They look good on the outside. Like those chocolate Easter bunnies, they glisten in their foil wrappings and look like the real deal but they may be hollow on the inside. Hollow people typically talk the talk but have a hard time walking the walk. They do not have a consistent passion for the things of God. They hold their moral values loosely and do not apply them to their daily lives. They are on autopilot in their spiritual life, if they even have one. They are hollow people who run hard every day after things that perish. Jesus warned against this type of living when He said, "So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:31-33).

Solid people, like solid chocolate bunnies, are the real deal. They are filled with the life of Christ. They are Spirit-filled and the Holy Spirit of God is in control giving them words to say, helping them make decisions, even directing the very thoughts they think. Solid people have clear moral values based on the values of the Bible and live according to their values. Solid people know what they believe, why they believe it, and are prepared to defend it. Solid people are kind and confident. They are a force for the kingdom of God.

How do you know if you’re hollow or solid? Like the foil-wrapped bunny, you don’t find out if you’re solid or hollow until you are bitten. How you and I react to adversity tells whether we are hollow or solid. Hollow people grow angry when they lose control or things don’t go their way. Hollow people blame others or God for their problems. When they stand at a moral fork-in-the –road, hollow people choose what’s most beneficial for them. Solid people are different. When adversity hits solid people, they run to the cross for help. They cry out to God. They fall back on their faith. They draw from the deep well of moral values upon which they have learned to depend.

Which chocolate bunny are you? You may look good on the outside but are you solid or hollow? The National Coalition For Purity is committed to producing solid people who glorify Christ by living in purity.
